It’s an uncomfortable fact, but conflict is part of life. Differences in needs, opinions and behaviour inevitably lead to relationship friction at some stage. The ability to handle conflict calmly and flexibly is key to preserving relationships in the long term.

Conflict can manifest in many forms, including passive-aggressive behaviour, direct confrontation, defensive stonewalling or a myriad of other relationship-damaging ways. These conflicts often stem from unmet needs or misunderstandings and tend to escalate if not addressed properly.

The Conflict Resolution Worksheet is designed to help your client navigate and resolve conflicts in ways that promote long-term relationship harmony.

The worksheet gives you structured activities to help your client understand that, while most relationships will contain some conflict at times, the way they respond to these conflicts makes all the difference and is within their control. The exercises will help your client:

  • Improve communication skills: Teach your client how to initiate conversations about conflicts without placing blame.
  • Enhance conflict management: Provide your client with strategies such as accepting influence and making repair attempts, which help de-escalate conflicts and increase mutual understanding.
  • Use healthy relationship practices: Encourage your client to set boundaries, use active listening, and collaborate on problem-solving to ensure both partners feel heard and valued.

Expected outcomes include:

  • Improved self-reflection: Clients reflect on their typical responses to conflict and identify areas for improvement in their approach to disagreements.
  • Stronger partnerships: Encourage your client to practice the exercises with their partner to strengthen their relationship by developing a shared approach to solving problems.
  • Proactive engagement: Take your client through practical exercises to think about and prepare for common conflict scenarios, improving their readiness to handle disagreements constructively.

Conflicts, while challenging, provide opportunities for growth and improvement in relationships. By applying the strategies outlined in the Conflict Resolution Worksheet, your client can transform conflicts from sources of stress into catalysts for strengthening their relationships.
